Which MPs Are Backing Proper Recall?

  • MP Archive: Local News

On Monday 27th, MPs will vote on what sort of Recall system they believe we need for the UK.

In Nick Clegg’s system, voters would only be able to remove an MP if fellow MPs give them permission to do so, or if they are jailed. He has hinted that he may amend his proposal to create some kind of quango of ‘ordinary people’ to decide whether or not an MP merits Recall. Either way, he refuses to legislate so that constituents themselves are in charge, which is how Recall works the world over.

The Labour Party are playing their cards close to their chest. They may attempt to table an amendment for a system that gives voters Recall power, but only in very narrow circumstances. Essentially, Recall – but only in pre- approved circumstances.

Conservatives MPs will be allowed to vote for whichever amendments they chose. There will be a free vote.

Along with a growing list of colleagues from all Parties, I will be tabling amendments  (LINK) that would remove the Government’s narrow criteria and instead put voters in the driving seat. If passed, voters would be able to earn the right to vote to ‘Recall’ their MP in a referendum if 20% sign a petition in a 2-month time frame

Here below is the list if supporters so far:
