UK Minister of State Zac Goldsmith and the Indonesian Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar met on 22 October 2022. They agreed the Indonesia-UK Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) concerning cooperation on Indonesia’s Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) Net Sink 2030.
The MoU aims to support implementing Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 Operational Plan. This contributes towards achieving Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), particularly through sustainable forest management.
Commenting after the visit, Zac Goldsmith said; “it was wonderful to spend time with Minister Nurbaya, and I’m grateful to her and her team for their welcome and hospitality. The MoU we signed marks a significant scaling up of our already close cooperation on climate change and the environment, and builds on many years of friendship and collaboration. On Minister Nurbaya’s watch, Indonesia has achieved a remarkable reduction in deforestation and has embarked on one of the world’s most ambitious nature restoration programmes. I was able to take part in mangrove planting, part of a programme that will see a staggering 600,000 hectares of mangroves planted along Indonesia’s coast. This new MoU will mean the UK supporting the Government of Indonesia to deliver and grow that ambition further still.”
