After last week’s vote on Real Recall, where MPs were asked to back a genuine, voter-led Recall system, or a restricted form based on narrow criteria and prior approval from fellow MPs, Isabella Gornall in my office has crunched some numbers. They are worth printing.
The Recall Bill proposed by the deputy prime minister was a “dangerous thing” which would make it “almost impossible” for voters to get rid of their errant MP, a Conservative politician has said.
On the 7th July, a cross-party group of MPs met in Parliament to finalise a genuine Recall Bill that would give voters the power to remove MPs if they lose the confidence of a majority of their voters.
On 10th September in Parliament, Zac Goldsmith MP, Stanley Johnson, the RSPB, the Blue Marine Foundation and the Pew Trusts presented a pamphlet calling on the Government to commit to creating Marine Protected Areas around three of its Overseas Territories: Pitcairn, Ascension, and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
Zac Goldmith, MP for Richmond Park has today joined Animal Defenders International (ADI), the organisation spearheading the campaign to end the use of wild animals in circuses in Britain, to back a new bill introduced today by former Labour Defra Minister Jim Fitzpatrick MP to ban such acts.
